Ghee is a clarified liquid that has been extracted from the pure cow milk and is a by-product of the process of butter manufacturing. It can be obtained from different cow milk and used for many cooking recipes. Its use in food preparation is not new but its health benefits have come to the fore with the discovery of ghee’s antioxidant properties and anti-ageing properties. In this article we are going to look at the ghee making process.

The process of making ghee from milk is a lengthy and time consuming one. Ghee is packed with vitamin A, D, E and K and other essential fatty acids. If you want to make ghee at home, then you will need fresh full fat milk.

  1. First boil the milk and collect the milkfat. You can also turn it into curd and then start the next process of ghee making.

2. Now churn the milk fat or curd in a wooden churned in a clockwise and anti-clockwise motion until the butter is formed.

3. Remove the butter milk and collect the butter. Now let the butter melt in a slow cooking process.

4. After a certain time you will notice that the milk solids have been separated from the mixture.

5. Now use a cheesecloth or strainer to separate the milk solids and collect the pure clarified butter in a glass jar.

Commercial ghee manufacturing companies use modern techniques in their ghee manufacturing process, in order to retain as much of the ghee’s nutty flavor as possible. During the ghee making process, the milk protein part gets removed and this is why ghee is safe for all. Try it at home and use it for making your next dishes.
